How to learn French WITH your kids!
Are you a parent looking to teach your child French, but not sure where to start? Don't worry, you don't need to be a native speaker to give your child a head start in a foreign language. With these five easy tips, you can learn French with your child and make the journey enjoyable and interactive.
1. Start with kids' lessons
Learning a new language with your child means you're both starting from scratch. Join a language program designed for kids, like The Cultured Home, and follow along with the lessons together. You'll both benefit from starting at ground zero and build a strong foundation for more advanced lessons later on.
2. Label stuff
Label objects around your home in French, starting with the most popular spots like the kitchen and your child's bedroom. Use high-use items like the refrigerator, doors, and toys to keep it relevant. When you're both in the room, say 3 or 4 of the words out loud together while using the items. This will help you both remember the words more easily.
3. Read bilingual books
Reading to your child in another language doesn't have to be a daunting task. Start with super simple stories and progress to more advanced ones as you get more comfortable. Bilingual storytime is a fun and interactive way to learn together and help your child develop a love for reading.
4. Track your progress
Set goals and track your progress visually to stay motivated. Get a whiteboard, stickers, or anything else fun to mark off your progress. Draw up the board with mini challenges like learning new words, watching video lessons, or reading a certain number of pages together. This will keep you both accountable and motivated to keep going.
5. Turn on Netflix subtitles
Next time you're watching a kids' program on Netflix, turn on the French subtitles. Listening in French and seeing the words in writing is a great way to boost language recognition. Your child will enjoy the program while you both learn new words and phrases.
Remember, learning a new language with your child is a journey, not a race. Enjoy the process, make it fun, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. With these tips, you and your child will be speaking French together in no time!
